A year in the life

It's been quite a while since I last made an appearance here. It's almost been almost a year since I started working so to commemorate the occasion, I decided to write a little something. So a year of employment has passed, and I have to say the working life is definitely bearable, though the whole concept of doing this forever still has me shaken up. But regardless, a year of my new life has passed by, and though I'm not sure if I should mourn or celebrate, I have decided to put a positive spin on the situation and create a top 10 best things about working list.

So here it goes…Let's hope I can come up with 10 things.

10. Surfing the net. It's my small and simple rebellion. Though the policy says I can use the internet for personal reasons to a reasonable extent, I wonder, is 4 hours out of the day "reasonable".

9. Breakfast. It used to be a meal I sometimes skipped because I woke up too late. Now its my great start to the day. I keep a box of cereal at the office and always eat at work. By the time I get ready for work, I'm starving and can't wait to get to get to my desk to eat. Then I spend the first 15 minutes of the work day leisurely eating my cereal. It's all about tricking yourself to wanting to come to work.

8. Lunch. Staying on the food theme, next comes lunch. Not only is lunch a great break from looking busy, it also gives you something to look forward to all morning. Starting an hour before lunch, I start day dreaming about all the things I could eat for lunch. Even though I almost always seem to pick one of the same three things to eat, it can't hurt to dream. And an hour away from the desk is always great.

7. Meeting new people. Work is sometimes a good place to meet new people, depending on who you work with. Working in IT, sometimes the ratio of cool : lame people isn't so great, but I have made some good friends in the past year.

6. Doing non work related tasks at work. I get a special thrill from taking care of errands at work. This is usually little things like paying bills on line, but I have spent some time doing my taxes at work. Pretty much anything that I can get  done at work is a plus. Hell I even get excited when I take a shit on work time. (I am actually writing this post at work.)

5. Going Home. The great thing about the work day is that it comes to an end. I don't think this needs any more explanation

4. Getting Paid. You may think that this should come higher on the list, but I find that after the first few pay checks, the excitement of getting paid has started to fade. Since the amount on the pay check doesn't change week to week its not something I really get worked up about. I get paid, I pay my bills, save what's leftover. It's become common place. I know this is one of those "don't what you got till its gone" situations, but for now, it will remain at 4.

3. Free Stuff. I know that some of my friends get numerous perks from working, from frequent flyer miles to hotel points. The perks at my post are limited but I am still happy with anything I get for free. So far its just been free food and ALCOHOL. I capitalize ALCOHOL because is there really anything better than free alcohol. Though the occasions for free food and alcohol have become few and far between since I got out of training I think I have done a fair amount of consumption on the company tab.

2. Weekends. I don't believe there is a working person out there that doesn't count the days until Friday. In college, I would get bored from just sitting around. Now it seems that I can't get enough of it. Even if I do nothing on the weekends, they always turn out great. And when I do something new or exciting, that's just icing on the cake.

1.Vacation. It's kind of ironic that at the top of best things about working list is vacation, i.e. not working. But really, I took all those summers I had growing up for granted. Now I see high school and college kids at airports not look thrilled out of their minds, and I get upset at them for not realizing what a great thing they have. Working life really makes you appreciate the down time. Anyhow, vacations are great and they are what keep me going.

So there you go. My list for now. Enjoy.

Later,

Monojeet

Wassup yo,

Still here in NYC. if you are here and I know you let me know. We can hang out. Otherwise whats new. I started real work about two weeks ago. No more training for me. No more coming home at 5 either. I have to stay till like 630. The days are tough...haha its not really bad..especially compared to some people. I guess I'm starting to adjust to working life. It's an adjustment for sure but I can't complain, especially being in NYC. Despite the working thing being in NYC is pretty awesome, but different. I have gotten used to walking everywhere and no cars and seeing people everywhere. I'm goign to houston on Oct 14-16 and Austin Nov 11-13 so if you dont want to get destroyed be in those two places those weekends. Other than that I dont have much to say. Oh yea..where are the comments. I have gotten like none...ofcourse my updates have sucked..but i still want comments. I guess most of the people i knw are busy now and can't read xanga's all day. Where have the good times gone. and if anyone knows how to i put a picture up on xanga without haveing to pay anything.

later dudes

"being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up" - some song. Good quote.

i didn't realize my last entry was in febuary. much has happened. life was so good. now life is so bad. haha ok i wouldn't say its bad but lets see where i was last year. I was just getting to Singapore, starting an adventure worth talking about. Tomorrow i will go to work, sit in front of a computer for hours on end, and at the end of the day have a little bit more of my coolness/youth/energy/soul sucked out. Reading about all these people coming back from all these adventures only leaves me hungry for another one of my own. Unfortunately my job. i.e my master, will not allow if for quite sometime if ever. I really have to find a way to weasel out of the working thing. Thats about all I have to say about working...As probably all you college people have heard...college is the best time ever...never work if you can avoid it. I wish i had something unique to say about this whole new chapter in my life but i really don't. there isn't anything interesting about it about it. I guess i need to stick to it for a bit to save up some money so i can get the hell out and do something interesting.

So I said in my last entry a recap was due for my experiences abroad but as you can see that didn't quite come together. I have thought about being abroad for sometime and I still think its just impossible to explain what its like. People ask me how it was all the time, but I could never fully explain it, and in attempting to avoid completely boring everyone I think I will leave my recap as simply"it was awesome". As for being back in america, it is definitely nice. I had missed being understood and understanding what people are saying. I missed just being in familiar surroundings. But then it's sad to know that hte adventure is over. Austin is freaking fun but its just hard to compare. Ultimately I am just happy I did it. In a few months college will be over and real life will begin. At least I have something to show for when I was cool, because I am sure working will suck the coolness out of me. But what can you do, has to happen sometime...I just didn't expect it so soon. but neither does anyone i guess.
